What was Sallack Motorsports ?
Sallack Motorsports was the utilization of one business working with
another
in order to achieve a common goal. To be the best at what we do. Put
simply,
Our sponsors help us to be number one at the tracks we race at and we in
turn, advertise for our sponsors to let the public become aware of their
company or product therefore helping them to be number one.
Sounds
simple
well it's not. I have been in the racing game since 1987 starting out in
the
hobby stock class. the car I built my self in my uncles garage in one
week. I
purchased a 1970 something, Pontiac LeMans, gutted it out and put in the
role
cage. I towed to the tracks with a home made tow bar. this method was
fine,
unless you racked up your car so bad it had to be trailered. This was
the
blood and guts class! You usually end up working on the car every night
whether the damage was your fault or not. but that was part of the racing experience and this is the class that will make you want more or break your spirit.
I ran this class for two years, I never had any top finishes heck I didn't
have a clue on setting up the car or anything. All I knew was I was Racing!
Sallack Motorsports is
( a sort of
on going history )
Yes I was racing and I was also
getting a hard lesson in the economics of it, along
with some other lessons. I found out it takes money
and experince to race, even more so if you want to
win. Remember, I was only 19 at the time.
Oh it was fun, after all, I had no
pit crew, no trailer, no experience and little money.
This was when I learned the lesson," The guy
with the experience, meets the guy with the
money." Well, the guy with the experience now
has the money, and the one with the money now has the
experience. That's what happened when I went to buy a
new engine for the ol' LeMans. apparently if your
race engine has 80,000 miles on it, that doesn't mean
its a seasoned motor, but rather it's ready for
retirement or at least a thorough rebuild. When the
original engine did finally go, in about two races, I
bought an engine from a guy with
experience. Yep he got my money and
I ended up with an engine that wouldn't even turn
over, let alone start. It was locked up tight! What
an experience!
My Dad and Uncle helped me out
with another engine, not the best but it held
together through out the season to give me lasting
memories like that of being hit from behind coming
out of turn two at Mckean County Raceway, spinning me
180 degrees in front of the whole feature field. Of
course I was on the pole that night, I did the only
thing I could do...Throw her in reverse and mash the
gas! I went down 3/4 of the back stretch in reverse,
finally got off the track, spun back around and kept
going until the first yellow came out.
My second lesson, get a trailer. I
gained this wisdom at Marion Center Raceway. Good ol'
boy Mr.Bowser apparently didn't realize you can lift
going into turn one, which sometimes is a good idea,
especially when the whole field in front of you is
doing just that. Basically my left rear tire left a
big burn out mark on his hood because when I was on
top of his car once again it was mash the gas
time! This little incident bent the axle. Of course I
used a tow bar to get to the races. I towed it
home and it kind of looked like one of those
"toddler" toy cars, you know with the wacky
wheels. I think when I towed it home the car was
going 55mph forward and 105mph up and down.
I figured this would be a good time to sell
this car and move up a few classes, after all I had
one year of actual race experience, next stop,
Late Models.
